Privacy Overview

This page explains what happens to your data when you use this map. The short version: this service collects nothing about you on purpose. It is a self-contained, static map application — there is no account system, no server-side logic beyond serving files, and no form anywhere on it. The only records that exist are the technical logs any web server keeps in order to answer a request at all.

Analytics and Cookies

None. This site uses no analytics service, no tracking pixels, no advertising or measurement scripts, and no fingerprinting of any kind. Your visit is not counted, profiled, or attributed to you.

No cookies are set. Nothing is written to local storage or session storage on your device. The map's search box, filters and layer toggles all run entirely in your browser and are never sent anywhere; the only way any of that state leaves your device is if you deliberately click “Copy link to this view”, which builds a link and places it on your own clipboard. Because nothing is stored and nothing is tracked, there is no consent banner to click through.

All assets on this page — stylesheets, scripts, fonts, map tiles, images and location data — are served from this site's own domain. No third-party CDN sees your visit. The one exception is described under “Player Position Links” below.

External Links

Location popups on the map, and a handful of navigational elements (the BatMUD logo, the Leaflet credit in the footer), link to services operated by someone other than me — mainly bat.org and tnsp.org. Nothing from those services is embedded here: the content only loads once you choose to follow a link, and at that point you have left this site.

The destination is then governed by its own privacy policy and terms, not by this page. Those services may set cookies, log your visit, or track you in ways I neither control nor can see. Your browser may also send a referrer header telling them you arrived from here.

The content, availability and data practices of linked sites can change at any time and are entirely beyond my control. A link is not an endorsement, and I cannot accept responsibility for what happens on the other side of it. If a link goes somewhere unexpected, please tell me and I will remove it.

Player Position Links

The map supports opening a link that points at a specific player's in-game location (for example, one shared from within BatMUD itself). If the link you follow includes a character name, the page automatically loads that character's portrait image directly from bat.org's own server — this happens as soon as the page loads, without any extra click.

Loading that image sends the character name, and your IP address, to bat.org as part of the image request — the same as it would for any image embedded on any web page. This is the only automatic (non-click) contact this site makes with a third party, and it only happens if the link you opened specifically named a character.

Hosting and Server Logs

This site is hosted by Kapsi Internet-käyttäjät ry, on servers located in Finland.

Like effectively every web server, it writes a technical access log for each request. A log entry can contain:

These logs exist to deliver the site, to diagnose errors, and to identify abuse such as attacks or excessive automated traffic. They are not used to build a profile of you, are not combined with any other data source, and are never sold, rented or shared for marketing purposes.

Log entries are kept for up to 12 months and then deleted or overwritten. Access is limited to me and to the hosting provider, which processes the logs on my behalf as part of running the server. Data may be disclosed beyond that only where I am legally required to do so.

Your Rights

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, an IP address counts as personal data, so the server logs described above fall within its scope. The legal basis for processing them is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)): operating a working, secure website.

You have the right to request access to any personal data held about you, and to request its correction, erasure or restriction, as well as the right to object to this processing. In practice a log entry cannot usually be traced back to a named person, so a request will need to include enough detail — such as an IP address and an approximate time — for the entries to be found at all.

If you believe your data has been handled improperly, you may lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority. In Finland this is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (tietosuoja.fi).

Changes to This Page

If what this site does with data ever changes, this page changes with it, and the date above is updated. There is no notification list, because there is no list of visitors to notify.
